IFDA has developed a list of resources that may be able to assist genealogy researchers. IFDA does not have funeral service or cemetery records, archived obituaries, or information regarding funeral homes that have been sold or are no longer in business.

IFDA Members

Contact the IFDA member(s) in the community in which the deceased died or is believed to have died. The IFDA member(s) may have catalogued records and obituaries and the contact information for cemeteries in that area.

State Vital Records Division

The State Vital Records Division issues certified copies to entitled applicants only, even for genealogy research. Entitled applicants include members of the registrant's immediate family (direct lineage). Legal guardians and legal representatives also are entitled, but must provide evidence to document entitlement.

Effective immediately, applications for genealogical searches at the state vital records office can be made by aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and first cousins in addition to parents, siblings, grandparents, great-grandparents. This expanded service applies only birth records at least 100 years old, and to death and marriage records at least 75 years old. All certificates will be stamped "Family History Research Only".

The applicant must make the request in writing, demonstrate the lineal relationship to the person named on the record, provide a legible copy of a current valid photo identification, and submit the current fee. As usual, no rush, expedited, or credit card service is available for genealogical searches.

Vital records are open for public viewing at the county recorder's office in the county of occurrence. Exempt are records sealed by court order, out-of-wedlock birth prior to July 1, 1995, and fetal death. The State Vital Records office does not update county records for years prior to 1921 unless the county has a request for a certified copy from the registrant or entitled applicants that are for non-genealogy research purposes.
